About hermETICS

The use of industrial waste as insulating materials (e.g. wood or tyres) is a promising approach in combination with conventional materials, thus creating new types of composite materials for use in building envelope oriented applications. These types of composite materials can improve the energy efficiency of the building and are an alternative to meet the sustainable strategy in Europe.

The hermETICS project consists of the generation of a technology that has previously been developed for Mortars in Exterior Thermal Insulation Systems for Buildings (SATE) following current market trends. For this challenge, End LifeTyres (ELT) type waste will be used to ensure lightweight characteristics in combination with self-healing materials that will act on possible cracks originating in the base mortar of the SATE, thus improving the airtightness of the building envelope.

Work packages of the hermETICS project

WORK PACKAGE 1: PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Definition of the state of the art of the materials to be used as well as the technical requirements of the solution to be developed. Within this work package, the feasibility and time planning of the project is also included, as well as the internal coordination of material resources to ensure the success of the project.

WORK PACKAGE 2: PROCUREMENT OF MATERIALS AND CHARACTERISATION

The objective of this work package consists of the acquisition of the cementitious materials, as well as the recycled and self-repairing materials necessary to carry out the project, as well as the physical and chemical characterisation to obtain the main properties of the materials according to their composition.

WORK PACKAGE 3: FORMULATION OF COMPOUNDS AND MIXTURES

The aim of the third task is to develop test samples and laboratory-scale prototypes by combining percentages of materials in new formulations to obtain building components. Their technical characteristics shall be determined and obtained through their characterisation by physico-chemical tests to validate their functionality.

WORK PACKAGE 4: PROTOTYPE MANUFACTURING

During this work package, the process and the products obtained will be scaled up. Once completed, the results of the project will be valorized, providing technical, environmental, and functional value for the construction sector.

WORK PACKAGE 5: DISSEMINATION AND EXPLOITATION OF RESULTS

Finally, during the final work package, the results obtained throughout the project will be disseminated and exploited.
