PRELIMINARY STUDIES FOR THE CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF THE PARADOR IN CANGAS DE ONÍS (ASTURIAS)

The “Monasterio de San Pedro de Villanueva” Parador de Turismo, in Cangas de Onís (Asturias), is a Site of Cultural Interest dating back to between the 8th and 15th centuries. This former monastery, one of the most significant historical sites in the Principality, combines Romanesque and medieval architecture and forms part of the region’s historical and religious heritage.

As part of its restoration and conservation work, TESELA has carried out specialist interventions, including:

  • Assessment of a water-repellent treatment on the tower of St Peter’s Abbey to protect the stone from damp.
  • Analysis of cleaning methods suited to historic materials.
  • Qualitative environmental microbiological study, identifying the species present and assessing their pathogenic potential.

This work has provided objective technical data to ensure sustainable conservation, whilst respecting the integrity of the monument and helping to preserve its historical, architectural and cultural value.
