CHARACTERISATION OF HISTORICAL MATERIALS AT LA CALAHORRA CASTLE (GRANADA)

At TESELA, we have taken part in a project to characterise historical materials at La Calahorra Castle, a heritage site of great significance in the province of Granada and one of the earliest examples of Renaissance architecture on the Iberian Peninsula. Built in the early 16th century, this building is notable for its unique combination of defensive exterior architecture and a refined interior influenced by Italian design.

The work carried out has enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of the original materials used in the building, covering both stonework and mortar as well as wooden structural components. This analysis has provided a detailed insight into their composition, nature and behaviour, yielding key information for their proper interpretation.

Thanks to this approach, it has been possible to gain a better understanding of the historical construction techniques used, as well as to assess the compatibility of materials for future interventions. All of this helps to define more precise conservation strategies, reduce uncertainties and optimise decision-making in restoration projects.

Initiatives of this kind reinforce our commitment to applying advanced technical solutions to cultural heritage, combining scientific knowledge and expertise to ensure interventions that are more respectful, effective and long-lasting.
