ROYAL COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA LA MAYOR IN ANTEQUERA: MATERIALS STUDY

The Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor crowns the city of Antequera from the walled enclosure of the old Muslim Alcazaba and was built in the 14th century in Renaissance style, with obvious inspiration from similar Italian constructions such as the cathedral of Orvieto.

In addition, the surface hardness and surface cohesion of the material were determined using portable equipment. For this project, a number of samples of stone material were analysed, as well as original and replacement mortars and a salt efflorescence. X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarised optical microscopy (POM), video microscopy (VM) and mercury injection porosimetry (MIP) were used.
