The MORFEO project has held its first progress meeting, a key gathering at which the consortium partners shared the progress made and outlined the next steps. This meeting marks an important milestone in the project’s development, as it enables the coordination of technical and scientific efforts.

The MORFEO Project and the recovery of steel slag

The main objective of the MORFEO project is to transform steel slag from electric arc furnaces into sustainable mortars and concretes through alkaline activation. This line of research is in line with the European decarbonisation strategy and with initiatives such as the EU’s circular economy programme. As steel slag, traditionally regarded as waste, is transformed into an opportunity, it enables a reduction in the consumption of virgin raw materials and lowers the carbon footprint of the construction sector.

MORFEO Project Consortium

The MORFEO project is being carried out by a consortium comprising the CELSA Group, the CETIM Technological Centre, TESELA Materiales Innovación y Patrimonio, and EXTRACO. This collaboration enables the project to be tackled from the research stage right through to industrial application.

Technical progress on the MORFEO project

The first follow-up meeting of the MORFEO project was recently held, marking a key step towards the creation of sustainable, innovative materials that are in line with European climate targets. During the meeting, various aspects of the project were reviewed, including:

  • The characterisation of steel slag.
  • The current state of development of alkaline-activated materials using steel slag.
  • The artificial intelligence models to be used.
  • How to approach the design of functional concrete

The future of the MORFEO project and its applications

In the next phases of the MORFEO project, the consortium will continue to work on the development, validation and industrial scaling of the materials developed, with the aim of facilitating their transfer to the market.
