EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A BIO-CONSOLIDATION TREATMENT ON THE COLUMNS OF THE LIONS’ COURTYARD OF THE ALHAMBRA
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a bioconsolidation treatment applied to the altered marble of the columns of the Patio de los Leones of the Alhambra. The analytical techniques used were: X-ray diffraction; optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. We have shown that bacterial carbonatogenic activity is possible on low porosity stones with decay by-products such as gypsum, as well as surface deposits of clay minerals and (ineffective) alkoxysilane pre-treatments.
Lime mortars will not only be stable and homogeneous, but will dynamically adapt to environmental conditions to maintain the integrity of heritage structures for centuries.
